4. Collecting Evidence/Data

Baseline Evidence/ Data

Before I start the Teaching Inquiry (research question four) I need to collate the data we have now. Our school is starting our writing initiative and currently collecting data on classroom programmes and student attitudes to learning.

In research question 1, I intend collecting qualitative data about current teacher practices in the school, which will add to this baseline of how teachers teach.

Research question 2 will give me baseline student voice about how they learn, which I can compare with student voice at the end of the Teaching Inquiry.

I will look at achievement for the start of 2016 in writing, mathematics and reading, which will give me quantitative data to measure against. At the end of the Teaching Inquiry I can compare the analysis of variance for 2016 against that of the previous year.

Focusing Inquiry

Teachers at my school:
I will use different survey methods to collect data from teachers at my school:
a) A Google form, because we have a lot of staff who are currently excited about using Google Drive tools.
b) Interview questions for teachers who are less comfortable with digital technology.
c) Classroom observation and student voice.

Teachers out of my school:

I want to gather ideas from teachers and school leadership personnel who are experimenting with SRL. I will use a Google form advertised on the social media where there are teachers: Facebook teacher groups, Twitter, Google+, the Virtual Learning Network and the Mind Lab community.

Students in my school:

For students in my school I will create a Google form for students in 1:1 laptop classes and a set of survey questions for a sample of students from the mainstream, accelerate and rumaki classes. I will also do observations in classrooms to see what SRL practices are evident.

Teaching Inquiry

At the end of the inquiry I will use Google forms and interviews to collate information from teachers and students at our school to find out what resources and strategies were used in the classroom and what teachers and students think about their learning practices.
